Murder plot, be damned. I could not get enough cuteness of our OTP that I don’t even care about the killer’s motive for killing/kidnapping. Our OTP, once again, proves that they are one well-match-made-in-heaven – Min Hyuk’s unsung heroic actions and him seeing Bong Soon as a gifted woman rather than cursed entity. Bong Soon on the other hand, while still unfairly annoyed at Min Hyuk, is beginning to warm up to him, slowlyyy.
Episode 6 Recap :
Back to not-so-cliffhanger where Guk Doo announces his stay at Min Hyuk Mansion, Min Hyuk is disgruntled about it, citing Guk Doo is the one who proposed Bong Soon’s sleepover in the first place. Guk Doo lays out his reason as Min Hyuk being the untrustworthy type and to complete his vexation, Bong Soon is all starry-eyed about Guk Doo.
At the police station, Team Leader is wondering why Guk Doo anxiously runs away and (accurately) deduces that he is in love with someone. He focuses his attention back to the case and was informed that two colleagues are currently interviewing Gyeongshim at the hospital.
Mama Bong Soon is with Gyeongshim when none of the mask samples they brought matches. She launches into Master-Yoda-like speech that the killer must be ugly looking, hence the mask, even asking the police to exclude good looking man from their suspect list. (Sigh.. It’s a good thing she’s not a police.) This left the police dumbfounded and leave meekly.
The trio are still ironing out the arrangement for the sleepover. Bong Soon is unwilling for Guk Doo to sleep on the ‘uncomfortable’ sofa but freaks out when Min Hyuk asks if she’s implying Guk Doo to sleep in his room. This motivates Min Hyuk to play his gay façade, pretending all too happy to sleep with Guk Doo. This devastates Bong Soon enough to screech out “He’s gay!!”.
Min Hyuk glares dagger at her and revenged himself by announcing that Bong Soon is his bodyguard. They exchange threatening glances until Guk Doo refuses to believe it. He points out that she is just a ‘weak girl’, at which Min Hyuk covers his mouth, looking scandalised. Bong Soon theorize that Min Hyuk employs female bodyguard to prevent rumour about him being gay. This silences Guk Doo for the time being and he requests for a room.
Amazingly, each of them starts having their fantasy runs wild.
In Min Hyuk’s imagination, Bong Soon eyes the asleep Guk Doo sheepishly before inches in for a kiss.
Guk Doo pauses in his imagination where Min Hyuk kisses the sleeping Bong Soon.
Bong Soon is imagining dirty too, with Min Hyuk caressing the sleeping Guk Doo and trailing his fingers along his nose line. (weird noise playing in the back ground)
The horrors snags them back to reality. Min Hyuk suggested to stay up all night and everyone agrees, not wanting their imagination to come true. They ended up at a customer-less bar, and Min Hyuk slays Guk Doo at the snooker game, with the bored (and sleepy) Bong Soon looking on.
Second competition is dart-throwing and it’s Guk Doo’s time to bury Min Hyuk. Min Hyuk asks for a rematch, in the form of drinking alcohol. The night at the bar quietens down with both men crumpled onto snooker table. Making sure the half-asleep bartender isn’t looking, she carries them out on her shoulder, while grouching about her tough night. She leaves them on the pavement to fetch the car.
Two ne’er-do-wells pass by and start stealing from Min Hyuk and Guk Doo until Bong Soon comes back and confronts them. Not threatened by her stature, the men continue with their demeanor and one leeringly asks if she wants to date. She answers sweetly “Oppa” before flinging him far into a trash bin. Another fights back and predictably, receives a kick on his nether region.
The actions was witnessed by Baek Tak and he stammers, “What is she?”, to which Jaws comically replies “A vampire!”. HA!
Min-Doo couple are thrown to the backseat and badass Bong Soon drives them home, totally pissed at how none of them is protecting her as sworn. At the mansion, she double-standardly throws Min Hyuk while gently snugs Guk Doo onto the sofa, even raising his legs onto Min Hyuk.
Back at Dobong-dong, Baek Tak’s minions’ ‘patrolling’ are scaring the residents and the area is full of police cars. One particular car is right behind a police car and the driver/killer spies on a woman closing down the pharmacy for the day.
Min Hyuk wakes up on the cold floor and sees the sleeping-beauty-Guk Doo laying nicely on sofa. He grudgingly notes he had been discriminated and snatches back his blanket and pillow. Apparently, he had dreamt about girl-in-pink-hoodie but woken up before he can identify her face.
He opens Bong Soon’s door to steal a look at her, and a comparison between her and girl-in-pink-hoodie invades his mind. He waves it off, impossible that Bong Soon is the same person as the girl. Ever-gentleman, Min Hyuk mutters a ‘good night’.
At the same time, Baek-Jaws couple who are still spying on them, come to the conclusion that Bong Soon is staying over at Min Hyuk mansion and decided to call it a day. Then, comical scene moment when Baek Tak wants to have ‘a meal’. Jaws asks about the kind of food he wants and Baek Tak lashes out “I told you I want a MEAL!”
“But boss, there are meals with vegetable, meat, noodles or even plain rice!” (This pair cracks me up!)
Next morning, Papa Bong Soon is awaken by just-arrived Mama at hospital. Mama is all smiley, thinking about the ‘result’ of yesterday’s sleep-in, when Gyeongshim informs her of Guk Doo’s presence at Min Hyuk mansion too. Mama is agitated and rants that he should be catching the culprit instead of staying there. “He’s not smart, just like his mother!”
A feast was laid on table at Min Hyuk mansion, and the chopstick is now disguised into a South Korean flag pole. Guk Doo and Bong Soon start friendly conversation, oblivious to Min Hyuk’s remark that they should thank him for eating his food IN HIS HOME. Bong Soon puts on weak girl pretense, unable to open a jam bottle so Guk Doo could heroically opens it for her. Min Hyuk stares at her open-mouthed.
Guk Doo pops the question, “Are you really gay?”
Min Hyuk (eyes shifted to Bong Soon for a second) : “I don’t answer such personal questions. Too rude.”
But he flings his chopsticks in a feminine way. (Sneakkyy..)
Guk Doo makes it a point that Min Hyuk and Bong Soon cannot stay together alone, and Min Hyuk points the same about them. That’s when Bong Soon implies it is more critical that both men must not stay together.
Flashback to last night : None willing to lose the drinking battle, Min Hyuk and Guk Doo got themselves so wasted. Guk Doo launched into provocative dance and beamed Min Hyuk seductively. Min Hyuk responded positively and when Guk Doo flungs him in for a kiss, the horrified Bong Soon barely stopped them in time.
Guk Doo then acted as Cinderella, telling his prince charming that he needs to get home before midnight, flew him a kiss and passed out on snooker table. Min Hyuk followed suit and both men hugged each other like no tomorrow.
Now : Min-Doo couple hang their head in shame. Bong Soon nonchalantly enjoys her chocolate whereas they choke on the extra-spicy soup, meant to cure their hangover. Using work as excuse, Guk Doo excuses himself from the breakfast. At the same time, Min Hyuk receives another threat call but he remains unfazed by the blackmailer.
Once Guk Doo is gone, Bong Soon reassures Min Hyuk that she will protect him but they soon bicker about the overly spicy soup. He accuses her of harming his stomach, breaching their employment contract. She retorts by challenging him to show her his stomach, then ambigously threaten to hurt him if he continues his tirade.
Guk Doo and team are under-covering at an area. He poses as deliveryman and when the suspect opens his door, they arrest him.
At Ainsoft, Secretary Gong awaits him with bad news – Osung Group’s stock hits low because of his gay rumour.
Min Hyuk searches internet solemnly, ignoring Bong Soon’s consolation that everything will turn out alright, just like her drunk video. He makes a call to a certain Reporter Park, to remove rumours on internet, and throws in gratitude for deleting the previous ‘drunk girl video’. Bong Soon heard it, finally realises that it was Min Hyuk who helped her. She thanks him which he gladly accepts.
Min Hyuk found the motorbike thief/stalker’s address and name. He links it to his father’s business and makes connection to Baek Tak. Apparently, Baek Tak used to work for his father. Meanwhile, Baek Tak and Jaws are in bath house talking about being entangled with Min Hyuk’s fate. Bong Soon is so ready to confront the stalker stalker now and they heads out, with her on the wheel.
She stops the car abruptly because there are two cars involved in accident in front of them. The male driver is bullying a female driver. Min Hyuk can’t stand watching and decided to get off before he notices that Bong Soon is already missing from his car!!
Bong Soon tries to reason with the man but her words go unheeded until Min Hyuk intercepted. Intimidated by Min Hyuk, the man drives away after sneering at him. Min Hyuk walks back to his car but Bong Soon is missing!!!
She emerges from the back seat of the man’s car and implores him to stop at a quiet area. The schmuck foolishly thought Bong Soon is into him and happily pull over. Wrong idea! Bong Soon starts ranting how the man bullies ladies but chickened at the sight of a taller man.
She then spins his car, turning it into merry-go-round straight out from horror movie. All this were witnessed by now-terrified Min Hyuk. Bong Soon flips back to her cutie-pie self and happily continues their journey.
At the police station, they are interrogating the caught suspect, supposedly the designated driver who drives the ballerina’s car. He claims that he was unable to find the ballerina upon reaching the meeting point. Team Leader believes he’s not the culprit and the killer impersonated as the driver, having heard her calling for a driver.
Min Hyuk and Bong Soon are at a pier and launches into million questions about her super strength. He insinuates that he’s like the heroine in ‘King Kong’ and Bong Soon is the King Kong, just peanut-sized. When she narrates that it runs in the female family members, he unconsciously asks if they ever get married, their daughter will inherit the super power too? (Err… are you confessing?)
Sensing her unhappiness about her power, he comfort her that she had done nothing wrong and encourage her to embrace the gift. “I will help you to use it to its fullest extend.” He simulates her strength like game characters, which needs training to upgrade. “I will help you to evolve.” Bong Soon begins to see Min Hyuk in a new light.
All is not forgotten for the driver/road bull as he cries over his wrecked car (music ‘Lascia Ch’io Pianga’ plays in the background).
Hee Jin arrives early at police station for their date. We then see Guk Doo goes back into interrogation room, looking glum. Turns out Hee Jin had broken up with him. He receives a call from Bong Soon, telling him not to worry about her as she is heading somewhere with Min Hyuk. They arrives at Min Hyuk’s family home.
The Ahn family are eating when Father Ahn asks Min Hyuk to get married, having found a good match.
Min Hyuk : “I’ve already got a girlfriend, Father.”
Bong Soon thought nothing of it, until Min Hyuk clutches her hand introducing her as THAT GIRLFRIEND.
Min Hyuk : “I am living with her now.”
Bong Soon can’t deny that they are living together, which makes the scene hilarious. Papa Ahn proceeds to ask her about her family and when she mentions ‘walnut’, he thought they have a walnut factory or owns a walnut farm. Min Hyuk corrects her stuttering by saying they run a walnut pie shop. He stops his father’s questioning by saying he shouldn’t force him to marry someone else as he has a girlfriend now.
Min Hyuk : “I will marry her. Isn’t she pretty, father? We will give you grandson soon! (Bong Soon chokes on water) What did you said? Two kids? A boy and a girl, right?
(Omo.. I am dying from laughter.)
Bong Soon and Min Hyuk are on their way back and she blasts him with fury, citing how her mum will be upset by this. As if hearing her, Mama calls in and asks “Have you sleep?” Bong Soon pretends that Mama is worrying about her and hangs up. This doesn’t escape from the ever-observant Min Hyuk that Mama is ‘worrying’ about her too much.
Next morning, Min Hyuk wakes Bong Soon up to train her, not before appreciating her sleeping face. They starts with wall climbing and then Bong Soon pulling many tires tied behind her. All are like a walk in the park for her.
On the other hand, Mama Bong Soon is hiking with her friends and talking happily about Min Hyuk. Suddenly their talks turn to Baek Tak’s re-development plan and they need to get rid of him. When Mama comments that he is like friend of pigs, the other friend defends that he looks nice. Then, they gossip about Guk Doo’s mother earning quite well from her latest novel but they barely remember the name – “Hormones at Home?” “Hormone in the Attic?”
It is ‘Hormone in the Room’, as Mama Guk Doo concurrently says out at the walnut shop, to her ever-fan, Papa Bong Soon. They are discussing the theory happily when Baek Tak’s minions walk in for tea time, puncturing the mood.
At police station, they have a shoe as evidence. Guk Doo walks in, like a zombie and Team Leader quickly deduced that he’s been dumped. Bong Soon is giving statement to Guk Doo about Gyeongshim’s assault by the killer. Guk Doo wonders why would the killer just scared off by Bong Soon’s scream.
Bong Soon finally tells Guk Doo about smelling gasoline-like smell on the killer. This makes Guk Doo very interested and they finally narrow it down to asphalt smell. Later Bong Soon asks him about his dating but he tells her that Hee Jin had broke up with him. “Hee Jin likes another man.”
Bong Soon feels sorry for him, and they shared a gazing moment before Guk Doo mutters “Why are we friends?”, sending Bong Soon fluttering. But he stops at it. Min Hyuk is waiting and complaining about hating being at police station. (Min Hyuk in black leather jacket is zjangg! )
School bullies are picking up rubbish and have slight altercation with Baek Tak’s minion. School bullies walk away and the minions are now harassing a woman, forcing her to sign on a paper. An old lady comes out from nowhere and beats them to pulp.
A man is at the pharmacy buying medication and omo.. he is the witness from second case. The pharmacist is very good to him and expresses concern about his health as he bulk-buying sleeping pills.
Mama Bong Soon and Papa just close the shop and Mama is so happy to see the earlier old lady who is introduced as her mother a.k.a Grandma Bong Soon. Mama Bong Soon runs to hug her, only to bump hard into her. Papa is stiff, afraid of grandma?
At the killer’s lair, he is scaring Bride No. 2 by getting into her cell and closer and closer until he takes off his mask. THE WITNESS IS THE KILLER. She screams.
Bong Soon is at Min Hyuk’s house, getting ready to sleep. She locks her door, as she remembers Guk Doo’s instruction. Min Hyuk is pacing in the dungeon thinking about Baek Tak.
Meanwhile, the pharmacist was attacked in Dobong-dong by the killer.
Someone tries to open Bong Soon’s room door but it won’t open as she has locked it. A man walks into Min Hyuk’s room and points a knife at his neck!
Afterthoughts :
The first half part of the episode had me really vexed at Bong Soon. She has some serious attitude problem, both in regards to her work ethic and as an individual. She is employed and paid well by Ainsoft as bodyguard and to get to the bottom of the blackmailing case. Instead she had been using her power (although unintentionally) causing grievance to her employer and spent most of her time pinning after Guk Doo. And she expected to have a chance at RPG development, citing her cerebral capacity, when she can hardly analyse Min Hyuk’s blackmailing situation? Her light tone on Min Hyuk’s case is frustrating.
To top it off, her double standard during the two-men-drunk party was unacceptable. With her strength it’s easy-peasy to just drop Min Hyuk on his bed rather than the cold hard floor. He is, after all, her boss and the owner of the house.
I basically HURRAYYYed when she found out that Min Hyuk is the one behind her viral video removal. And this led us to our favourite scene, when she truthfully expressed her misery over her super power and Min Hyuk cheered her up effectively. “You had done nothing wrong. You are just born with it.” (Er.. Maybelline?) But I squuuueeeeedddd anyway.
Min Hyuk, on the other hand, is growing on me. Okay.. who am I kidding? I am totally heads over heel for his character. Weirdo a bit? Yes, but he’s the only one with the right mind and right heart in the story. He’s always the one who righted Bong Soon’s mistakes, take action to ensure Bong Soon’s safety, even if it meant getting his (love) rival involved. Ego never gets in his way. Most Kdrama male lead don’t do that, right?
This episode also revealed something.. Min Hyuk is not on very bad term with his father, after all. I remember his father looking at him from the window/balcony on the day the left home. He still goes back for weekly dinner and didn’t talk back at his father when he named him his heir or asked him to get married. Instead, he eased his mind by lying that he’s in a relationship with BS. Unlike his brothers, he’s financially independent and could have just ignore his family, if he chooses to.
I think secretly, they care about each other. He even said that his father used to beat up his half-brothers for locking him up in the closet. Min Hyuk may dislikes his father’s dark business (and corruptions) but he still cares for him. I am eager for more episode on father-son revelation.
Guk Doo seemed to be less of an irritant to me, now that he’s free from the snake. And he softens his tone (a bit) to Bong Soon, and started to wonder about his true feeling for her. Despite his lack of detective senses, he did cleverly concluded that Min Hyuk is not gay. And thanks to his reminder, Bong Soon locked her door and saved from whatever the mysterious man planned to do to our peanut-sized King Kong.
