Somboon Seafood Restaurant, Soi Chula 8, Bangkok

After a bad buffet experience at Baiyoke Sky, we dine at Somboon Seafood restaurant. It was widely acclaimed by tourist reviews that it’s a best place to dine in Bangkok, so here we are standing in front of its branch near National Stadium area.

Somboon have 5 branches in Bangkok and its outlet at Siam seemed to be nearest to us. After a day of shopping, we walked from MBK to Somboon. We decided not to take taxi, as I have read about scams where the the taxi driver will drive you to a fake one called Somboondee instead so that they can gain commission from it. So let’s remember, it’s S-O-M-B-O-O-N ….. Somboon or in Chinese it’s called ‘Jian Xing Jiu Jia/Jiu Lou’. Alternatively, you can remember its symbol of a white crab in a red circle.

We easily found Somboon after a 10 minutes walk. Most of the customers seemed to be Taiwanese, Japanese, Chinese, Koreans, Malaysian and Singaporeans. Perhaps it’s because we were the worst dressed customers of the day, the waitress don’t seemed too eager to serve us.

I have already read its menu online and straight away ordered the Curry Fried Crab, Deep Fried Fish with basil leaves and Tom Yam Kung. Finally I have had my first Tom Yam Kung in Bangkok! I went to the washroom for a few minutes and dinner was already served when I got back.

We can proudly say that we didn’t order the wrong thing for the fish. It suited my taste so much with its tint of sour, sweet and spicy taste. Very appetizing indeed. Priced at 240B to 260B each, depending on the size/weight of the fish.

Now, I was a bit (just a little bit) disappointed with its tom yam kung. After tasting the seafood tomyam at Danang Seafood of Phuket, I still couldn’t find any others that could match it. Still, the prawns were fresh.

As the signature food of the restaurant the Curry Fried Crab was delicious! A bit expensive though with its M sized crab at 380B each, L for 600B each and for bigger crabs it will be 100B for every 100grams. Ours was one M sized crab since we can’t finish much.

My very own personal crab-opener, so dedicated to his ‘job’.

My watermelon smoothies.

Our total bill was 882 Baht which I thought was quite reasonable as we have a rather big garoupa fish. A Korean couple look disbelievingly at the portion we ordered.

Direction to Siam Banthadthong outlet:

From MBK, walk towards the direction of National Stadium. You’ll pass the National Stadium BTS railway station on your right side. Continue walking and you’ll pass the main entrance of National Stadium. You’ll come to a crossroads with traffic lights and turn left there. At first street on your left is Soi Chula 2, next Soi Chula 4 and so on. Somboon is at Soi Chula 8 which will be the fourth street. Once you get to Soi Chula 8, you won’t miss it as it’s a big outlet!

To get back to Baiyoke/Pratunam area, cross the road to opposite of 7-11 and hailed a taxi there, or you can choose to walk back to Siam.

I revisited Somboon Seafood in 2014. Read about it here.
