Ipoh – Penang Food Trip part 1

Last month we had a blast of holiday by going up north to Penang with a stopover lunch at Ipoh and spent another 2 nights in Pangkor Island. As you might have noticed I don’t particularly like driving north because the hilly road and the lack of R&R stops but for the love of food, I guess it’s worth it.

I am getting more and more like my in-laws. the intention to start our journey at 7 morning went way past over 10 before we were finally on North-South Highway but with the lateness, came the opportunity to route to Ipoh town for the infamous Bean Sprout Chicken.

Over the years we had hits and misses when it comes to Bean Sprout Chicken. Our previous family trip witnessed the smoothest poached chicken we had from Onn Kee but this time, the chicken were tougher and drier.

The meat ball were soggy and the soup seemed to be laden with too much MSG.

One can’t go past this area without getting ourselves a bowl of Funny Mountain (Kee Fong) Tau Foo Fah. Smooth and light textured, we didn’t feel full nor guilty from indulging in it. The portion was small but justifiable for the price of RM 1.50.

The ugly side of Ipoh Town
What’s up with the illegal parking jockey trying to take money from us when we could have skillfully park our cars without their help on public parking space? These illegal jockeys who stationed themselves at the crossroads of Lou Wong and Onn Kee are a sore to the eyes. I’ll rather park my car further away from the leeches.

We continued on road for another 2 hours before finally reaching Butterworth bridge to Penang but met with a horrible traffic jam, taking another hour to reach Armenian Street Hotel in Georgetown.

This was our second time staying in this hotel and no doubt will continue to be our preferred hotel whenever we want to stay in Georgetown. Love Lane, the wall murals and the street food haven of Chulia Street are all within walking distance. That being said, as at anywhere in Malaysia, I will not recommend walking the dark streets alone at night though.
