If you are a food hunter like me, you might have gone through the long slow process like me. Googling hours for ‘food in XX place’ and after deciding your food list, alas! The website did not mention the exact location of the eatery! You cursed and then, you spend the next 15 minutes searching and tagging it on Google map or GPS.
Those days are gone with the introduction of OpenSnap app, by the online food and restaurant guide OpenRice. To introduce OpenSnap in short, it is like a Facebook but instead of sharing what you did today and your (not again!) Candy Crush scores, you will be able to share your food review, discover new eateries on the block and last but not least, share the enticing photographs of the food.
Upon installation, you will be prompted to select your location and the default language. The location can be changed accordingly later. The home screen will enable you to search and filter the eateries by areas, cuisines, current offers and editor’s pick. To choose better, help yourself to the comments and food photos submitted by other OpenSnap users. After all, a picture is worth a thousand words.
OpenSnap also enable you to follow your friends and check out the restaurants they had visited, commented or bookmarked. Vice versa, you help other foodie by snapping a photo of your food, post a comment and bookmark your favourite restaurant as reference to your friends or followers.
Back to the problem in my previous scenario – how do you find the restaurant? Just click on the map view and you will not only have the location but the navigation too, using Google Map, Oruxmap or Waze. This is another plus for me since I won’t have to use the map apps separately anymore.
Alternatively, you can search for restaurants in the vicinity or by area with the Mapview function.
If you do not know what dishes to order, fret not, as signature dishes are listed, sorted by taste score in descending order.
If you are not much of a sharing-Yoda, OpenSnap serves as a interactive food diary too, allowing you to personalized it with your usual hangout area. In my case, PJ and KL areas are my favourite haunts but both are very large districts. OpenSnap breaks them into smaller sections that helps me to narrow down my search easily.
If you are someone who takes pride in being updated with the latest food news, you can view the latest photo feed in major cities across Malaysia. Who wants to be clueless when everyone is talking about the new ‘Nasi Lemak out of a shoebox’ in town? Certainly not me.
