The standard of living in Hong Kong is so high that a long term stay in this city is hardly sustainable. Whether you are in Hong Kong for a month-long work, student exchange program or simply hope to explore every inch of Hong Kong, I think I might have a good solution for your accommodation woes – Apple Dorm.
Location, location…
To date, there are two Apple Dorm in Hong Kong offering rooms on monthly basis – Sham Shui Po and Sai Wan. We had the privilege of being invited to visit Apple Dorm in Sham Shui Po, just by taking MTR to Sham Shui Po plus a mere 5 minutes walk through the ever busy Apliu Street Market.
Based on the MTR map, Sham Shui Po is just two stations further north of Mong Kok, the base of shopping activities and seven stations away from the business hub in Central.
Apple Dorm SSP is easily accessible by taking the buses too with buses 36A and 117 (to Happy Valley) stopping right at its doorstep.
Is it safe?
The entrance to Apple Dorm is secured with pin code door lock, minimizing the possibility of strangers entering the premises. The same applies to the room doors.
The Room?
Extremely cozy but totally manageable with the addition of hooks for clothes and basket to place your necessities. The desk is more than enough for books and laptop and the space can be easily made cheery with a few ornaments and faux greenery.
Room rates starts from HKD3000 which is considered a steal in this densely populated city of 7 million people.
Another layout of smaller room:
Although without the desk and chairs, the hollow underbed can serve as a storage compartment. All the air conditioner units are in the corridor and each room has a fan to draw the cold air into them.
There are plenty of toilet and bathroom cubicles in the common area on each floor and from my observations, they are rather clean, in fact, much cleaner that what I used to have in university hostel.
Other facilities?
To top the list of facilities and make the tenants feel like home, are a functional fridge and microwave when they need a quick meal.
We made our way to the top floor which is also the laundry/washing area.
There are chairs and parasols to be utilize, so one can enjoy a smoke, mingle around with fellow tenants or simply enjoying a view of Sham Shui Po.
Facilities:
Once a week maid service
24-hour hot water
Free Wi-Fi
Pantry area
Toilets & showers facilites
Fire System
CCTV
